I rented Rachel Getting Married last night because I thought it was a comedy.  It wasn’t at all.  It was about addiction, enabling, beautiful music, death, mother daughter relationships, and rehab.  Five things I unfortunately knwo too much about.  The Chef fell asleep five minutes in & I became riveted by the film.  I couldn’t turn it off even though I could barely see the screen through the tears.

It was a good movie.  Actually it was great.  At times it was a little slow.  And even though it was troubling for me to watch (I normally stay away from junkie flicks) it ended being quite thoughtful.  Anne Hathaway was fantastic and for once I could actually see why she was in the running for an Oscar.

Tonight The Changeling.  I expect the tears on this one.

******Since I have yet to hear back from winner of the Food Fiction Book Giveaway I am going to offer it again on this post. Two books. Signed by the author. Rockstar Parking.
To win this awesome prize pack of super fun leave me a comment with a movie recommendation. The Chef & I are movie buffs however we always end up with crap. Rachel Getting Married was the first good movie I have seen since I saw Benjamin Button. Your suggestion will be much appreciated!!!  xoxo

A winner will be picked by midnight on Sunday.  Bonne Chance.

You should definitely check out a movie called “I Like Killing Flies” about Kenny Shopsin a restaurant owner/cook in NY who I believe the soup nazi is based on. Its one of the only movies I have gotten from Netflix more than once and I am reading his book ‘Eat Me’ right now.

I watched ‘Dear Zachary’ last night and it was really powerful. Documentary for a kid about his father. Definitely a tear jerker/HELLA-sad if you have kids. If you decide to see it, be sure not to read ANYTHING else about it. The news story or even its headlines will ruin the movie.

Hi CW! I highly recommend “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner”. I actually plan on watching it tonight. Yes, it is an older movie, but one of the true classics. Spence Tracy’s monolog is awesome and Sidney Poitier is brilliant. And who doesn’t love Katharine Hepburn. One the best movies of all time.

If you haven’t already seen it, “Once” was a great rental. So was “Little Miss Sunshine”. A couple of my favorite Woody Allen movies that I could watch 100 times are “Manhattan Murder Mystery” and “Everyone says I Love You”. If you’re a fan of Mad Men, “The Best of Everything” is essential. Now I need to go update my Netflix . . .

“Sympathy for the Devil” if you’re a Rolling Stones fan. Jean-Luc Godard documentary of sorts, folowing the making of the album in ’68.
“Les Triplettes des Bellville” is animated, but awesome.
The most recent movie we’ve watched was “Ratatouille,” so maybe I’m not the best person to get movie recommendations from.

Not a new film, but I can never see “To Kill A Mockingbird” enough times. Most recent rental was “W”, worth the watch (talk about scary!). Thanks for the review, sounds like it was riveting!

My most recent Netflix sleeper was called “Dedication”. Its a dark romantic comedy. Yes, it has Mandy Moore, but it also has Billy Crudup.

    ENJOY!

I had nightmares (woke up at 3 am absolutely terrified) after watching The Changeling. I’m sure you’ll understand after you see it. I don’t have children and it did that to me.

It’s not the greatest movie, but I recently watched and really liked The Rocker.

This is England came out a few years ago and I absolutely loved it, if you haven’t seen it you really should. Another suggestion Wrist cutters a love story was fantastic in an off the wall yet beautiful way . I loved and sobbed through Rachel Getting Married and Benjamin Button so it seems as though our taste in film may be similar, enjoy…by the way Changeling is HEAVY be prepared.

Have you watched the Bowie, Catherine Deneuve, Susan Sarandon movie The Hunger yet?

    A few of my faves-

I agree with Kimi, To Kill A Mockingbird is one of my favorite films I’ve seen the movie as many times as I’ve read the book, 4 or 5 times.

Twelve Angry Men is a film that like To Kill A Mockingbird, everyone should see.

One of my faveorites is Unstrung Heroes. It is a touching, family bonds, coming of age movie with Andie MacDowell, John Turturro and Michael Richards.

Turtles Can Fly is another heart felt coming of age film about young boys in Iraq

I almost rented Dear Zachary last night. We have had I Like Killing Flies for over a year and have not yet gotten too. Soon I hope!!!

    Erin

I do love that movie, it’s fantastic~I have a lady crush on Kat Hep

    Wendy-

When Once came out the Chef & I watched it over and over and over again. I think we both fell in love with both of the characters(and even the actors!). It’s soooooo goood!

    Alyssa-

Haven’t seen the RS doc but must admit that I too love TOB and Ratatouille. The boy and I watch it like mad. And when the Chef watches it he cries.

    Kimi-

I do love TKAM, haven’t seen it in ages but should really buy it. I can’t wait to watch it with my kids when they are old enough to understand and appreciate. I would like to watch W but the past 8 years has turned me off to all things GWB. Maybe in 8 years I’ll take a walk down nightmare lawn:)

    Amber & Heather-

I plan on watching The Changeling tonight and I am prepared. I just bought a jumbo box of kleenex!

    Diane-

I just watched The Hunger 2 weeks ago. Loved it but wish Bowie was in it a bit longer. I have never seen Unstrung Heroes and I just Netflixed it.

    Thanks you guys YOU ROCK!

Haven’t seen many movies lately…but, I did see 7 Pounds a while ago which I actually liked…although many people didn’t, so it depends on what types of films you like. Also, I’m a big Will Smith fan so that might be why I enjoyed it! I also enjoyed Happyness…
As far as a new movie coming out on dvd really soon, I’m looking forward to seeing Milk and Slumdog Millionaire…Like I said, we don’t get out much! Those seem like obvious choices if you haven’t seen those yet. Good luck on a good choice – it definitely sucks when you are excited to see a movie & then it really sucks!

I’m not sure how you feel about subtitles, but if your eyes are up for it I would recommend Mar Adentro (The Sea Within). It reaffirms my admiration for Javier Bardem’s acting skills. Reaffirmation is the key term because it builds on my love of Before Night Falls. Many scenes in Mar Adentro hinge on emotions expressed without words but instead with gestures and looks which obviously transcend any lingual challenges.

We just watched Rocknrolla…which i thought was the best guy richie film in awhile but maybe not a good pick b/c of the junkies but not crazy w/ the junkies like trainspotting but they are there.

Indie – Wristcutters: A Love Story

    Comedy – Lower Learning

Foreign – Love Me If You Dare

Maybe you have seen them, maybe not. I think they are all great!

Gran Turino with Clint Eastwood. He is still a badass and the movie made me laugh out loud! Poignant and moving story; hilarious use of the “f” bomb.

I am uncool. The last movie I rented was some Walmart documentary. Help.

    “Rachel” sounds cool.

I may or may not have recommended “Tell No One” to you already — but, you really really really need to see it!

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0362225/

It’s a psychological thriller that happens to be French film, however the film’s intensity is so high (while the dialogue remains fairly minimal) that you don’t even notice you’re reading subtitles.

After seeing it this past fall, José and I still talk about it with regularity. A memorable film that definitely made quite the impression*

  18. Sarah Riv on March 15th, 2009 8:57 pm

I highly recommend Slumdog Millionaire. It has definitely lived up to the hype and has such a great background story amongst the predominant theme in the movie. Plus it totally puts our lives in the US in perspective when it shows the scenes of how the “slumdogs” live in India.

  19. Allison on March 15th, 2009 9:25 pm

I liked the Changeling – it gets slow at times. And, I didn’t know that much about the story before I watched it other than it was based on true events.

  20. Jenny on March 18th, 2009 6:36 am

Just watched Changeling the other night. My husband and I were actually hoping that our 4 year old son would crawl into bed with us that night. Maybe it’s just me but I didn’ t love Angelina in the role. Anyone else?
