Nikon Shutterbug in Training

Published in Widowism by chefswidow

I didn’t realize how important having a good camera was until the amazing people at  Nikon sent me their D3000 model to try out for The South Beach Food and Wine Festival.  It has almost been a week and I’m still nowhere near being as awesome of a home photographer as her but I’m on the road…

Pictures taken with Nikon digital SLR D3000 camera

Give me a couple weeks and I will post my review here.  In the meantime I wanna know what kind of camera you use?  Do you love it?  Do you hate it?  Do you have any camera tips for me?  I’m such a newbie that I didn’t even know what aperture meant.  Meh.

xoxo bitches

I’m also over here today…

Love the Nikon D40 I got for xmas. I’m trying to learn all I can….but even in auto-mode my pics are awesome! We should find a class to take together!!

I heart Nikon! I just got the D5000 for Christmas! I really have no idea what the hell I’m doing with it myself, so I definitely don’t have any tips, but I’ve convinced myself it’s totally worth the investment! ;P (If you want to buy one after your test run – I can’t recommend Dodd Camera enough – they are awesome!)

    I use a Fuji Film S1000… it’s not the greatest…and eventually I’ll have a “real-deal” camera… i’m looking forward to your review though!

Film Class- 1991- Ideally the subject’s eyes , or subject of the picture , are not in the middle of the picture , rather they are 1/3rd down. Almost 20 years later, I can still see that in Portraits / newscasts/ scenic pictures- the focus is at the 1/3rd line. I use a Kodak something or other- we take pictures but never do anything with them so Pretty Cameras are low priority in our house.

We’ve been looking into buying a camera since Christmas — Nikon cameras have always been awesome for me, but haven’t made the time to really research our options. Can’t wait to read your review.

That said, when my ex broke my digital Nikon Coolpix, he replaced it with a shittier model. It can’t even focus properly, and most times I don’t realize until pictures are already uploaded. ARGH!

Woman after my own heart … photography has run in my family since well before my mom and dad had a family friend shoot pictures of us curled up around the puke green bean bag chair while I was still wrapped in a crocheted afghan … hippies … i know!

Either way … The Captain (aka my lovely husband) has only promoted my obsession by purchasing every camera I’ve owned since the digital I took to Italy took a bath in a washing machine in Cambridge. As for what I call my “bar” cameras (those small enough to carry with me, but nothing I’ll cry over too much if I happen to lose it), those have typically been Canons. If you want something a little meatier … and heftier … Nikon is your bogie.

My latest obsession: Nikon D90. Its sweet .. tons of features .. and the pictures are to die for. I even had a chance to be second shooter at a wedding with it and the pictures START OUT looking totally professional. There isn’t a lot of photoshop required. Its so impressive that I have a new rule that includes only home grown (or taken) artwork being on every wall in the house … and I have a portfolio in the making!

I’ve been a Nikon girl since I was in diapers … and this one, easily tops them all.

awesome pics! I use a sony cyber-shot – not too fancy, but I love it!

although today I had to resort to my lovely iPhone since I forgot my camera….

love those shots! what a fun experience ;)

Dude…. there are free tutorials all over the internet. Youtube mainly. You can watch & pause & play around. Check out the Nikon website – it’s where I started.

The more you play the better you get. Like sex.

I got a Pentax K20D (since replaced in their lineup by the K7) for Christmas. Like most, I don’t know 3/4 of what the thing can do, but I love it.

Even my most pathetic efforts blow away the point and shoot cameras. It’s really something to see.

There’s a blog I’ve been to (White on Rice Couple) and they have an awesome photography section. It’s detailed, but it’s super easy to follow. Basically, it breaks down the technical terms for folks like me who are incredibly daunted by the whole thing.

    Good luck!!!

All of your comments have made me so excited to mess around with my camera!

Thanks OhMommy for making me giggle like a school girl. xoxo

I’m now off to YouTube land and White on Rice photog blog. Thanks again y’all!

    Keep the tips coming too!

I can use all the help I can get.

That would have to be a Nikon…..awesome pics. I have a Nikon N60 — it’s old school, 35 mm film and all — but I LOVE it. I can’t wait untill I can get one of the awesome digital ones. I have a point and shoot Sony Cyber-shot, it does the job and the pics aren’t bad, but I still Love a Nikon.

LOVE my Nikon D3000. I got it as a gift from the hubs for Christmas and while I was mad about the cash he spent… its the best gift ever. Kids are only little for a short time and it was totally worth the investment. I don’t know much about it, but am figuring it out!

  14. ashley on March 4th, 2010 3:19 pm

i love my nikon d60. i thought for sure i would always be a canon girl but i LOVE LOVE LOVE my nikon, so easy to use and seamless with my apple. im hoping to take some classes at dodd too, they offer specific classes for specific cameras. love the kids photos too on the blog.

  15. Kelly on March 4th, 2010 3:56 pm

I got a Nikon D60 a year ago and I love it! I took a one-on-one hour class with Dodd to learn some basics. It was worth it. Also, read the manual and look online. The pictures from these new digital SLRs are amazing! Have fun!

  16. Wendy on March 5th, 2010 12:23 am

I have a Canon Rebel and it has allowed me to take some pretty good pictures without cracking open the manual. It’s a good mom-cam.

  17. N on March 5th, 2010 12:49 pm

Totally a Nikon fan! Have the D80 and love it. There are better cameras, but I went with the advice of “buy what feels good in your hands”

Have learned a ton with my new photog classes I’m taking … depth of field (a/k/a aperture) being my favorite. … that and learning how to freeze the subject while letting the rest of the frame’s motion be captured (put it on shutter priority and set at about 30 … play around with the exposure a bit and presto)

have fun with the 3000 … isn’t it a monster?

I have a Cannon EOS Rebel Digital, and an EOS Rebel that takes the real deal – film. I have shot many beautiful pix on both and have in the last year invested in a huge lens to shoot my daughters playing their sports. My cool Cleveland Heights next door neighbor on RAdnor is a photojournalist and is going to tutor me on the techs, so I can’t wait to learn more. I have made my photos into wall art and am soon going to try my hand at making them into t-shirts. Rock on and keep loving that chef!

  19. Allison on March 8th, 2010 10:46 am

my camera is terrible, it was a quick purchase before Boston and I need something better. Stat!

  20. domestic extraordinaire on March 8th, 2010 1:31 pm

I am a Canon girl myself. I have a xsi. I LOVE it! The most important thing is to take that camera around with you everywhere, invest in a cute purse/camera bag so that you can feel confident it won’t get hurt. A great book to get it Understanding Exposure. (not sure if it was mentioned above or not) And just shoot all the time.

Good luck and I am sure you will have a great time!

I agree that I never thought the camera made much of a difference, other than MP. But after Erik and I got the Nikon D5000 I saw a world of difference. I still like having my little pocket camera ( Sony cybershot) for quick trips though.
