naomi,

We hosted a couple last summer who happened to have been from a city in France that my husband and I spend time in almost every year. I couldn't believe the coincidence being our first time hosting and all. The couple spent just one night if I recall correctly. I made a nice dinner and we talked into the night. They were travelling across the US.

We haven't hosted since, we were away a lot and then timing did not worked out for folks who requested to stay with us but I think we are hosting 3 people next month.

We've never "Couch Surfed" during our travels. I'm much more comfortable opening my house to someone than staying with someone else. Plus, my husband and I are in our 40's, we would rather have our own digs. We love to get to know new people though when we travel.

I recommend hosting be it through couch surfing or a foreign exchange student program. I was an exchange student when I was young and our family hosted many times. I am glad for all of the experiences we had.

Another great way of opening one's self to the world is by sharing your home with travelers when they visit your town.
